Firearm Qualifications

On May 17th , 2023, a public meeting of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board was convened at the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Board, located at 2643 E. University Drive, Phoenix, AZ. A Proposed Firearms Qualification Course Revision for Annual Qualification was on the agenda for review, discussion, and possible action. The annual qualification course was last revised in 2013.

Following a period of review and discussion, the Board took the following actions:

  • The Board unanimously approved qualification courses titled “40-Shot Daytime Semi-Automatic Qualification Course”, its accompanying Purpose Statement and Definitions Documents and the “40-Shot Nighttime Semi-Automatic Qualification Course”.
  • The Board unanimously passed a motion to allow all agencies and academies to either shoot the qualification course that was approved in 2013 or to shoot the newly approved qualification course that will be mandated in January 2024. The current qualification course will expire December 31, 2023.

This communication and related documents below are intended to notify agencies of the change to the firearms qualification course, provide detailed information regarding the new course of fire, and to assist agencies/academies as they transition to the new qualification course.
