The police certification of an individual, who is terminated, or quits his or her job, becomes “inactive” upon separation from a police department. Once this occurs, the individual can no longer perform the functions of a police officer.
Although marijuana use is legal in Arizona, consumption of marijuana remains a violation of Federal Law. In addition, the Federal Firearms Control Act prohibits an unlawful user of marijuana to possess a firearm. AZPOST utilizes Federal Law to guide minimum qualifications involving drugs. The current AZPOST standard related to marijuana use prohibits use within two (2) years of appointment to an agency. An agency head who wishes to appoint an individual whose use of marijuana is determined to be disqualifying may petition the Board for a waiver of that restriction. The AZPOST Board decides whether to grant an agency’s petition.
